About Laser Skin Resurfacing
Laser skin resurfacing at Adean Kingston, M.D., PLLC is a nonsurgical cosmetic procedure that uses either the non-ablative device (1540 nm Fraxel) or the ablative device (2940 nm Erbium-Yag) . The treatment is performed for reducing facial lines and wrinkles, addressing aging lax skin and for diminishing skin irregularities, such as acne scars, pigmentation, and other flaws. Laser skin resurfacing is an effective treatment for patients desiring a reduction in the appearance of lines and wrinkles, tightening of the skin and overall healthier, more rejuvenated skin. Depending on the condition of your skin and the amount of downtime you have available, Dr. Kingston will help guide you during your consultation as to whether your best results will come from a series of the 1540 nm Fraxel treatments or from a 2940 nm Erbium-Yag procedure. There is some downtime associated with most laser skin resurfacing treatments. Any concerns or questions can be discussed with Dallas, Texas dermatologist Dr. Adean Kingston during the initial consultation.
Types of Laser Treatments
There are two types of laser skin resurfacing treatments that are chosen based on your skin's needs. Some are performed for milder cases of skin damage while others are more aggressive:
- Ablative Laser Treatments (2940 nm Erbium-Yag by Palomar Icon)
Ablative lasers remove thin layers of skin on the face with a precision that allows the technician to minimize skin damage. Ablative lasers are best for skin tightening and removing deeper wrinkles and acne scars. Because this is a more aggressive treatment, there is more downtime with this procedure. Results can be seen within a few months after a single treatment session.
- Non-Ablative Laser Treatments (1540 nm Fraxel by Palomar Icon)
Non-ablative lasers do not remove any skin — the laser simply creates micro-channels in the skin to promote collagen remodeling, leaving intact skin around the channels and thus is a faster natural healing process. Non-ablative treatments are best for removing fine lines and wrinkles and patients who desire less downtime. Areas most commonly treated are the face, neck, chest and dorsal hands. Results are best after a series of treatments. This laser also treats scars, stretch marks and melasma.

"I went in for my second procedure this week and have to say, I'm blown away (again) by the level of care I experienced at Dr. Kingston's office! I was nervous before my first filler treatment, but their office is so discreet and sophisticated that I was immediately put at ease. Their staff is knowledgeable, warm and enthusiastic and I don't think I'll ever be able to see anyone else. I was astounded by the outcome of my treatment, and firmly believe their team would be able to consult anyone to achieve their desired results. I cannot recommend them more highly!"- C.G. / Yelp / Jun 12, 2019

There are many factors to consider when choosing which laser resurfacing treatment is right for you. Laser skin resurfacing is geared toward patients who are seeking improvement in their overall complexion. If you have sun-damaged skin, acne scars, age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, or pigmentation issues, this treatment can help correct these imperfections. In addition, it works well if you have scaly patches, rough texture, or other skin irregularities. This treatment is not recommended if you have very dark skin, an active skin infection, recent history of sun exposure/tanned skin or moderate to severe acne that is not well controlled. In addition, it is important to understand that there is downtime associated with these laser therapies. Some patients, depending on the condition of their skin, may need up to 2 – 3 weeks to fully recover.
If you have a deeper or a more intense ablative laser resurfacing treatment with the 2940 nm Erbium-Yag laser, you will be given medication prior to the treatment to help reduce pain so you can relax during your session. If you are having non-ablative 1540 nm Fraxel laser treatment, a topical anesthetic will be used to numb the treatment area. During the procedure, you will have mild discomfort as you feel some heat and pulsing from the laser which is reduced by the cooling system used during treatment. The laser works to destroy damaged skin cells while also stimulating new collagen growth.
What to Expect
After a non-ablative treatment with the 1540 nm Fraxel laser, a healing ointment will be applied to the skin and you can return home to recover. The skin will appear red, and there will be some irritation and swelling which should subside within a couple of days.
If you are undergoing a more intense laser treatment with the 2940 nm Erbium-Yag, your downtime will last longer, from 1-2 weeks. The treated areas will most likely be covered by dressings and the irritation, swelling, and burning sensation will be intensified. Medication can be prescribed to help reduce these side effects. All patients should limit their sun exposure after their laser treatment and apply sun protection regularly. It is important to avoid interfering with the healing process and follow strict post procedure instructions to avoid scarring or other adverse reactions. Once you have healed completely, your skin will feel softer while looking rejuvenated, younger, and clearer.
