About Kybella

Even a little extra fat in the upper neck area can cause the appearance of a double chin that can be bothersome to both men and women. The excess pockets of fat under the chin (also known as the submental area) may be caused by aging, genetics, or weight fluctuations that lead to a weaker chin and jawline for an undefined profile. Dallas, Texas dermatologist Dr. Adean Kingston is proud to offer a new way to get rid of submental fat at Adean Kingston, M.D., PLLC. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Kybella is the first nonsurgical treatment for submental fat. The active ingredient in Kybella is a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid (DA) that acts as the natural DA in the body to break down and absorb fat. Once it is injected under the chin, you may see a noticeable reduction in fat. When the fat is destroyed, the cells cannot return so you are able to enjoy your new slim profile and strong jawline for years to come.  Kybella can also be used off-label for other areas on the face and body that have small unwanted fat bulges and this can be discussed in further detail during your consultation.

Who Are Ideal Candidates for KYBELLA?

The best patients for Kybella injections have excess fat under the chin (submental area) that causes a double chin or unwanted fullness. This injection treats stubborn pockets of fat that cannot be reduced with normal weight loss methods due to genetics, aging, or other conditions. If you are at a healthy weight, but diet and exercise have not helped to reduce the fat under your chin and in your upper neck, Kybella may be the right treatment for you.

How Does KYBELLA Work?

Kybella is performed during an in-office appointment.  After the skin has been cleansed,  a numbing ointment is applied to the treatment area to help with discomfort during the procedure. The procedure takes about 15 – 20 minutes, which includes several small injections of the liquid DA targeting the submental area. Patients hold a cooling device during the procedure to reduce the mild burning and stinging which can occur.  Some patients may only need one treatment to reach their goal while others may need multiple treatments spaced 6-8 weeks apart at Adean Kingston, M.D., PLLC.

What Is Recovery Like After KYBELLA?

After your Kybella treatment, you are able to leave the office as soon as you feel comfortable and can resume your normal activities. You may have temporary bruising, swelling, or numbness under your chin, but this should not last longer than a few days (in some patients up to a few weeks). Call Adean Kingston, M.D., PLLC immediately if you are experiencing any unusual side effects, such as facial muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, or if your smile is uneven. While the fat cells that are destroyed do not return, the remaining cells can become larger so you should maintain at a steady weight after your Kybella injections to prevent new pockets of fat from forming. Optimal results following this treatment leave your neck looking tighter and sleeker, and your profile will be more defined.

The price of Kybella treatments will depend on how many treatments are needed. During your consultation, a customized plan will be created to work with your goals and budget. A member of our team can also discuss payment options with you during your consultation.

How does Kybella work?
The active ingredient in Kybella, deoxycholic acid, works to break down and destroy fat cells in the body. After they are destroyed, these fat cells will not grow back. Therefore, additional Kybella treatments should not be necessary once you have reached your desired outcome.

Am I eligible for a Kybella treatment?
There are a few factors that could make you ineligible to receive a Kybella treatment. You must be over the age of 18 years old, not pregnant or breastfeeding, and cannot have any infection at the treatment site. Prior to receiving treatment, you should share any health concerns and your medical history with your injector so that they can decide if you can safely receive the treatment.

How many treatment sessions will I need?
During your consultation, a customized treatment plan will be tailored to meet your needs and goals. Most often, patients receive between 2 – 4 Kybella treatments before achieving their goals.
