"The entire staff is very kind and helpful. Dr. Kingston did a tremendous job helping my son with red spot on his chin. He said of the three dermatologist he visited in the past six weeks. She cared by far the most. She listens well and is proactive. Her knowledge in this field is picked up on very quickly during the appointment. I highly recommend this office."- J.S. / Google / Oct 02, 2020
"I had an appointment set for 10:30 and they had me in the exam room by 10:30. I felt very comfortable the whole time. Fast, professional, friendly, and very skilled."- R.W. / Google / Jul 30, 2020
"Very pleasant experience. Beautiful office, everyone is very friendly and helpful. The prices are reasonable. Adean was great. She immediately (and correctly!) identified the condition. She was also very patient with answering all the questions. Would definitely recommend. The medicine worked fine. I must also note that nobody was pushy, unlike the people we had seen in a different place. All in all, we felt like we were visiting a very helpful and knowledgeable doctor, not a medicine sales promoter."- E.C. / Google / Jun 11, 2020
Sclerotherapy is best for patients who have small to medium blood vessels that are visible through the skin of their face and body. Typically, these spider veins are most prominent on the thighs and lower legs, so patients afflicted with spider veins often avoid wearing shorts and swimsuits. Sclerotherapy patients should be in good general health before their treatment to avoid complications. Patients should not be pregnant or have a history of blood clots.
Sclerotherapy can be performed in one of our treatment rooms quickly and without any anesthesia. The spider veins being treated will be identified, and the skin will be sanitized with alcohol. A fine gauge needle will be inserted into the vein and the sclerosing solution will be applied. The needle will be removed and a bandage will be applied to the injection site to stop any minor bleeding. This process will be repeated until all spider veins have been treated.
What to Expect
After sclerotherapy, you will be able to resume all normal activities. You may notice some bruising, inflammation, or redness in the treated areas, but this should subside naturally. Compression garments will be recommended by Dr. Kingston to help blood circulation after your treatment for faster, better results. It may take some time for the sclerosing solution to work, but eventually the treated veins should shrink, turn white, and then fade or disappear. You may need two or more treatments to achieve optimal results, but most patients are pleased with their improvements after one treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does sclerotherapy cost?
The cost of sclerotherapy will depend on the number and size of the veins being treated, in addition to other factors. During your initial consultation with Dr. Kingston, she will perform a full exam and take her time to listen to your concerns and answer any questions you have in order to create a sclerotherapy treatment plan that is tailored to your specific needs. From there, she can estimate your costs and go over all your payment options.
What's the difference between sclerotherapy and laser vein treatments?
Sclerotherapy injects a unique solution directly into the target vein to make it shrink and disappear. Laser vein treatments are noninvasive light-based therapies that are applied to the surface of the skin to target the vein so it collapses and is reabsorbed by the body. Sclerotherapy is usually ideal for medium to larger blood spider veins and varicose veins (greater than three millimeters) while laser vein treatments are best for smaller vessels, typically ones in the face.
What's the difference between sclerotherapy and Asclera?
Asclera is a popular brand of sclerosing solution approved by the FDA to treat spider and varicose veins. It is made with polidocanol instead of sodium tetradecyl sulfate, which is in traditional sclerosing solutions. During your first appointment, Dr. Kingston can discuss the differences and benefits of Asclera and other brands of sclerosing solutions to determine which one is best for you.
Can I get sclerotherapy on my hands and face?
Sclerotherapy can address spider veins, vascular blemishes, broken blood vessels, and varicose veins on your face and hands. When you meet with Dr. Kingston, she will assess your areas of concern and decide whether sclerotherapy can be used to safely treat the vein(s). If she believes that sclerotherapy is not a great option for you, then she will discuss your alternatives, like laser vein treatments.
How long should I wear compression stockings after sclerotherapy?
Dr. Kingston or a member of our medical dermatology team will talk to you about how long you should wear compression garments after sclerotherapy. The garment is designed to help with blood circulation and bruising for optimal healing and results. Ideally, you should continue to wear the compression garment after your recovery anytime you are seated for a long period of time, such as a lengthy car ride or flight.
