About Eczema
Eczema is a chronic or relapsing inflammatory skin disease that occurs because the epidermal barrier function is abnormal in eczema patients and therefore does not provide an adequate defense against allergens and pathogens. This can lead to inflammation of the skin, redness, and itchy patches anywhere on your body, but occurs most often in skin flexures such as behind the knee and in the creases of the arms. Atopic dermatitis is the most common type of eczema and usually starts in childhood and is often associated with allergies. At Adean Kingston, M.D., PLLC in Dallas, Texas, we will work with you to create the best personalized treatment plan for you to relieve itch and restore your skin to a healthier state. Causes
Doctors aren't entirely sure what causes eczema, but it's believed to be triggered by many factors. Immune system abnormalities, genetics, the environment, skin irritants, and skin barrier defects are the most common causes. Family genetics play a role because certain genes can cause patients to have extremely sensitive skin. A patient with relatives who suffer from eczema, asthma or allergies is at a higher risk of developing eczema themselves.
Symptoms
Eczema is most commonly characterized by dry, itchy, or red skin as well as persistent scaly patches. Typically, your skin will begin to itch before a rash appears. Most patients experience patches of skin that are chronically itchy, dry, or thickened. These patches can appear anywhere but mostly occur on the face, neck, hands, or legs. With children, patches can appear on the inner creases of the knees and elbows. Once the skin is scratched, dry patches and open sores with crust can develop, which can also lead to a bacterial infection.
Treatment Options
Eczema can be treated with an array of recommended over-the-counter products such as antihistamines and certain soaps/body washes as well as prescribed medications. Prescription medications for mild to moderate eczema may include steroid creams and skin barrier repair creams, while oral or intramuscular steroids, immuno-suppressant medications or even an injectable biologic medication may be necessary to help those with severe eczema. Antibiotics may be needed if there is an associated bacterial infection behind the eczema flare.
